Tashi Delek Trimalo, everyone. My name is Ginger, and I am here today on behalf of Chinese Youth Stand for Tibet.
Today is the third time I speak on March 10th. Our initiative has encouraged more and more Chinese people to join this movement. Today I want to share something about one of us: my friend, Tara Zhang Yadi, a prominent Chinese international student who supports Tibet. She was arrested last summer upon her return to China. This was devastating news for both our Chinese and Tibetan friends. She is only 22, and she just graduated from college. I believe she is probably the first Han Chinese to be arrested for supporting Tibet. She was able to travel inside Tibet, where she saw the harsh reality: Tibetan children are losing their mother tongue, and Tibetan is disappearing from the streets. She was so sad about the situation in Tibet. She worked hard on her Tibetan, hoping that through her writing and advocacy, she could build understanding and break down bias between Han Chinese and Tibetans. She is a bridge-builder, a peacemaker, and a champion of reconciliation between the Han and Tibetan peoples. Zhang Yadi deserves recognition for promoting ethnic unity, not arrest. We strongly condemn this action and call on the Chinese government to release her immediately. Free Tara!!
When we heard of her arrest, we were full of fear— but this only made our resolve stronger. We now understand that what we are doing is exactly what the CCP fears the most, which means our advocacy is working. We believe that the only way to make real change is to change minds in the Chinese‑speaking world.
In Chinese, we have a saying: 「解铃还需系铃人」。 The CCP created the ethnic tensions between Han Chinese and Tibetans; as the saying goes, the one who tied the bell must be the one to untie it — it is up to the Chinese people to fix what the Party has broken. In the past, Tibet received significant international support — but that is not enough. We need your help to encourage more Chinese people to stand with Tibetans. As Chinese Youth, we have a historical responsibility to Tibet’s future.
We are a group of young people who speak Chinese and use peaceful methods to build people-to-people connections between Han Chinese and Tibetans and to realize our vision of peace. Yet the Chinese government accuses us of “inciting separatism.” This shows that the Chinese Communist Party cannot represent either Tibetans or Han Chinese. It reveals Beijing’s real position on Tibet: they do not want real understanding between Tibetans and Han Chinese, and they do not want a real solution to the Tibetan issue.
Here, I want to speak to my Tibetan brothers and sisters. You have powerful spiritual strength and amazing organizing ability. You are the older generation of exiles; you can help us, the Chinese, learn how to organize protests, stand together, and build stronger exile communities.
Tibet cannot be free without a free China, and China cannot be free without resolving the Tibet issue. This flag is a replica of one used by a Tibetan student from Minzu University in Beijing during the 1989 Tiananmen democracy movement. It bears the words “Tibet, Human Rights, Democracy, Freedom” in both Tibetan and Chinese. We hope this flag can become a symbol linking Tibet to China’s freedom and democracy. We also hope Tara can serve as a symbol of the new generation of Chinese people who support all minorities and unite us!
When I stand here, I am not only helping others; I am also reclaiming the true image of the Han people. When we stand shoulder to shoulder with our Tibetan brothers and sisters, we are fighting for our shared future. Let’s walk together to Lhasa! Let us unite. Let us demand justice. We will stand with you! Let us call for a Free Tibet — and a Free China.
Free Tibet !!
Free China !!
